9:00 am – 12:00 pm * Morning Session
Part 1:  Washington’s World Language Learning Standards
In July, 2010, OSPI officially adopted the national Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century as our state’s K-12 World Language Learning Standards. We’ll begin the day with a quick review of the “5 C’s” and how to use them to plan instruction, reflect on learning experiences, and set the stage for student assessment.

Part 2:  Assessing Language with LinguaFolio
Language teachers have been searching for years for cost-effective tools to help support assessment of student language proficiency. Washington State is launching a pilot of just such a tool: LinguaFolio. In this part of the workshop, we will introduce LinguaFolio and its components and allow language educators to delve into the LinguaFolio checklists in greater detail – to actually tailor LinguaFolio for their own language classes from elementary level to high school and beyond.   LinguaFolio Pilot:  http://sites.google.com/site/worldlanguageswashington/assessment/linguafolio-wa

1:00 pm – 4:00 pm * Afternoon Session
Part 3:  Formative and Summative Assessment Options
A complete assessment system needs to include more than just student self-assessment. In this part of the workshop we’ll talk about options for summative assessment, such as the Standards-Based Measurement of Proficiency (STAMP) and other Computerized Assessments of Proficiency developed at the Center for Applied Second Language Studies at the University of Oregon, as well as formative assessment tools, such as ClassPak, available through Avant Assessment.

Part 4:  Credit for Proficiency
We’ll provide an update on the new model policy and procedure for districts to offer competency-based credits to students who can demonstrate language proficiency and the important role of LinguaFolio and externally validated assessments in the process.
